Key Map Features
532,000 hectares of land protected
This map is about 10x more comprehensive than the Greenbelt expansion study area used for consultation in 2021 by the Province of Ontario.
6,000+ of kilometres of waterways & shorelines protected
We want protection for the entire Grand River including 1st, 2nd & 3rd order rivers, streams & tributaries.
1,000,000 people’s future protected
The Grand River watershed is home to just under a million people and more than that visit these lands and waters every year.
Significant farmland protections
This area is often referred to as the breadbasket of Ontario. We need to make sure these lands are not paved over to secure a sustainable future.
Key Policy Points
Contiguous Protection
This map presents contiguous protection connecting the headwaters of the Grand River, the Oak Ridges Moraine protected area, and river flows to Lake Erie.
No under the water table aggregate extraction
We don’t believe the Greenbelt should be an aggregate belt. Groundwater must be protected.
Minimizing development in the Haldimand Tract
The Haldimand Tract is unceded territory. We need to minimize development in this area until such a time as these land claims are meaningfully addressed.
No land swaps for Minister’s Zoning Orders
Minister’s Zoning Orders are being used in ways that streamline development without sufficient consultation or review. No land can be taken out of the Greenbelt for these undemocratic tools.
Greenbelt West Map Signatories
The map, developed by the Greenbelt West Coalition, is supported by a number of organizations & individuals who recognize the importance of permanent, contiguous protection for source water, farmland, ecosystems, and biodiversity - all of which are threatened by unchecked growth. These are the Greenbelt West Map Signatories so far…
